FORT SILL, Olka. – The All-Air Force Women’s
Softball team captured their first gold medal since 2007. After dropping their first game of the
tournament to Army 8-2, Air Force didn’t look back posting an impressive record
of eight wins and one loss.
Air Force defeated Army 5-2 in the rematch. Army lost a crucial game
to Navy in extra innings (6-5) forcing a gold-medal showdown against the Air
Force. After 9 grueling innings with the score tied at one, Air Force broke
through in the 10th inning. With two
outs and a runner on third, Air Force Tech. Sgt. Joyce Wells (Kadena AFB,
Japan) delivered a smashing hit up the middle for the RBI to defeat Army 2-1.
“The key component to our success in winning the gold this year was
our chemistry,” said Air Force Head Coach Senior Master Sgt. Salomon Vieyra
(Joint Base-San Antonio, Texas). “From day one of camp, the Airmen showed dedication,
commitment and heart in representing the Air Force.”
Army finished with a record of 6-3 to earn the silver. Navy placed
third with a record of 4-5 and Marines finished in fourth.
Army earned five All-Tournament selections, Air Force three, Navy
two and Marine Corps one.
Senior Master Sgt. Vieyra and his assistant coach, Mr. Daniel Ayon (Joint
Base-San Antonio, Texas) will lead the 2014 US Armed Forces Women’s Softball
team as they compete in the ASA/USA National Softball Championship in Edmond,
Okla 25-29 Sept.
