By Steven Dinote Armed Forces Sports

After dominating the tournament, Team USA falls to Brazil during their rematch in the finals 69-60.

The U.S. Armed Forces Women’s Basketball team competed in the 2014 Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) Basketball Championship in Meyenheim, France from 15-22 June.

During the finals against Brazil, Specialist Kquanise Byrd (Army - Fort Bragg, NC) lead the U.S. with 12 points followed by Petty Officer 2nd Class Syreeta Bromfield’s (Coast Guard – Arlington, VA) seven rebounds. However, the Brazilians kept the pressure on defensively and handed the U.S. their first and only loss of the championship.

The U.S. won their first meeting in the opening game of pool play, defeating Brazil 66-56. Specialist Angela Tisdale (Army-Ft Campbell, KY) led the scoring with 17 points, including 4 ‘3-pointers’. Sergeant Kim Smith (Army- Ft Riley, KS), was the top rebounder with 8 boards.

Next, Team USA defeated Germany 124-30. Six-foot-one Capt. Caitlin Chiaramonte (Army - Ft Bragg, NC) scored 15 points and Staff Sgt. April Cromartie-Golden (Army-Ft Knox, KY) recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Over half of the USA players were in double figures.

To close pool play, USA dominated once again, handing France a 83-33 defeat. Specialist Tisdale once again led the scoring with 16 points. Petty Officer 3rd Class Talena Faison (Navy-NB San Diego, CA) had 8 rebounds and Lieut. Junior Grade Angela Myers (Navy-USS Shiloh) had 9 assists.

The U.S. entered the semi-finals to face Germany once again, winning 116-12.

Brazil handed France another defeat in the semi-finals 91-48, to advance to the championship match against the U.S.

France finished the tournament in third place after defeating Germany 93-36 in bronze medal game. The 2014 CISM Championship also featured the Men’s Regional Championship. The Brazilian men went undefeated and defeated Kuwait in the finals 129-66 to take gold.

The U.S. Armed Forces Women’s Team was selected after a three-week trial/training camp hosted at Fort Indiantown Gap, PA. The U.S. was coached by Army Lieutenant Colonel William Johnson (Ft Shafter, HI) and assisted by Ms. Tonya Strobridge (Navy - NAS Millington, TN).

France will once again host the CISM Women’s Basketball Championship next year in Meyenheim, France in May/June 2015.
