From the Philippines to the Basketball Courts: Basketball Isn’t Just a Sport, it’s Life

By Cpl. Diana Salgado, War Media Activity U.S. Armed Forces Sports

For U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Vinny Ortega, basketball wasn’t just a sport; it was a way of life. A passion that shaped who he is today. Growing up in the Philippines, he played with dedication and believed that the game was more than just a game, it was like a religion. “Basketball is everything to me,” Vinny says, “it’s like a game of life, pretty much.” His love for the sport followed him across the world, shaping his character and opening doors he never expected.

Vinny’s journey took a pivotal turn when he moved to the United States in 2014, initially planning to stay for just a year before returning to college in the Philippines. However as he approached 18, immigration lawyers advised him to stay in the U.S., challenging him to seize the opportunity. He enrolled in college, playing basketball at multiple schools and earning recognition, but he soon realized that the path to his dreams required more than just talent, it needed purpose. That’s when he found himself drawn to join the Air Force in 2021. Vinny viewed service as a way to gain citizenship, further his education, and continue his basketball journey. “Join the military, get your citizenship, and get your education,” and Vinny took that advice to heart.

Vinny went on to play at the installation level at his first duty assignment and eventually represent the Air Force in the 2024 Armed Forces Basketball Championship. His first experience was surreal; “getting to represent your whole branch is, like, a huge experience,” he shares. To wear the uniform of his branch and compete at such a high level wasn’t just a personal achievement, it was a testament to his dedication and resilience. “Basketball is like a game of life,” Vinny explains, “you impact everybody’s lives differently through it.” For him, basketball isn’t just a sport; it’s a way to connect, inspire, and represent his country and his branch.

His story is one of perseverance, purpose, and passion. Vinny believes basketball is a universal language that teaches life lessons about teamwork, respect, and humility. “It’s like a family,” he says. “Most of the people I know, I’ve met through basketball, and it’s taken me to places I never imagined” he emphasizes. “You can impact everybody’s lives differently through it.”

His coaches in childhood instilled in him the importance of carrying himself with integrity. Vinny recalls advice his coach gave him; “Act like you’ve been here before”. A lesson he carries into his military service and everyday life. “It’s about carrying yourself in a certain way, knowing where you’re going and respecting the game.” Despite the seriousness he approaches his responsibilities with, Vinny’s humor and sarcasm light up any room, and he always strives to honor those who have helped shape him, both on and off the court.

Today, Senior Airman Vinny Ortega continues to serve his country and inspire others through his journey. His story proves that sometimes, the path to greatness isn’t straight; it’s a winding road filled with sacrifice, opportunity, and a relentless passion for the game that gave him so much. “Basketball isn’t just a sport,” Vinny says with a smile, “it’s my life, my escape, and my way of giving back to the community I love.”
