2026 Armed Forces Basketball Championship Opens in California

By Cpl. Diana Salgado U.S. Armed Forces Sports

The 2026 Armed Forces Basketball Championship kicks off May 12 with a variety of highly skilled athletes from across the country coming together to compete for first place. The event brings together the U.S. military branches in celebration of the athletes’ dedication and skill, displaying the outcome of consistent discipline and fostering unity within the armed forces community.

The event will be held at Paige Field House on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton from May 12 to 17. After a two-year break, the Armed Forces Sports Basketball Championship is making a triumphant return, bringing excitement and renewed competition to the courts. Athletes from all branches are eager to showcase their skills and reclaim their dominance in this thrilling event.

After winning the 2024 championship, the Navy men’s and Air Force women’s teams return to the court with the weight of expectation on their shoulders as every team in the tournament looks to dethrone the defending champions. With this year’s championship taking place on a Marine Corps base, the Marines may feel an even greater pressure to rise to the occasion in front of a home service crowd, leaving fans to wonder if the home court advantage will be enough to fuel a championship win as the week unfolds.

U.S. Army 1st Lt. Kwabena Davis, a first year team member of the Armed Forces Sports Army Basketball team, expresses excitement about playing with a diverse group of teammates, serving our country globally, uniting for a common goal. Davis states, “It's exciting just having a group of 14 guys from all over the world just get together and accomplish one goal, and that's winning.”

For U.S. Marine Corps Chief Warrant Officer Three, Christopher Madden, the head coach, stated, “The Marine Corps is big on family, so being around like-minded individuals, playing the game we all love, while serving brings a whole other level to it.” “We haven't hosted since 2014, so it’s a big deal to us to represent and protect our home court.” Coach Madden also says, “Coming into the season, into this tournament, our theme this year is, why not us?” and goes on to say, “We’ve been working pretty hard over the year to try to get prepared for this moment, so I feel like we’re ready to compete and play.”

As the 2026 Armed Forces Basketball Championships begin, stay tuned as the week unfolds with teams fighting for the top placement. Each player will be reminded that championship titles are earned through dedication and resilience, rather than talent alone. Success is driven by effort, discipline and maintaining focus under pressure. When every player commits and pushes forward, the team can overcome any challenge. Ultimately, both on and off the court, victory comes from perseverance and unwavering belief in each other. Exciting moments and fierce competition lie ahead, and only one team will ultimately claim the title as 2026 champions.
