Local Sailor wins World Military Golf Championship, Team USA Men Dominate Tournament

By Mr. Steven Dinote, U.S. Armed Forces Sports U.S. Armed Forces Sports

Navy Lieutenant Jacob Meloche of Naval Base San Diego, California captured gold in his World Military Golf Championship debut held at the San Diego’s Admiral Baker Golf Course.

Seventeen nations arrived in San Diego, California for the 14th edition of the Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) World Military Golf Championship held from 1-8 October.

Meloche earned a spot on the U.S. team after competing at the Armed Forces Championship also held at Admiral Baker.

From the start, Meloche turned in a dominate performance fending off a competitive field scoring 11-under over the four-day tournament.

France’s Maxime Mathey and Nicolas Muller fought back two tough days on the front end of the tournament, each going 10-under by the end of the tournament.

In the end, Meloche maintained his lead to win his first title, with Mathey and Muller winning silver and bronze.

Meloche, along with teammates Marine Capt Nicholas Brediger of OSS Charlottesville, Virginia, AIr Force 1st Lt Joesph Crisostomo of Vance AFB, Okla., Air Force Tech Sgt. Kyle Wesolowski of Lackland AFB, Texas, Army Chief Warrant Officer 4 Brian King of Fort Novosel, Ala., and Marine Staff Sgt. David Banks of MCAS New River, N.C., took the lead on day one and never looked back.

Banks and Crisostomo finished five and four under par, with Brediger going even to keep USA 27-strokes ahead of second place France for the team gold.

France finished with a team score of 3-under, good for silver, as Team Ireland took bronze to cap the podium.

Wesolowski and King turned in solid performances, tying each other in the end going 5-plus. With both men over forty and tied for first in the Seniors Division, Wesolowski and King faced each other in a playoff to determine the winner, with Wesolowski taking the crown. Ireland’s Joe Hannigan took bronze in the senior’s division.

Players competed in four rounds of stroke-play golf, with teams of three women each. The top two scores from the team counted for the team tally.
