Late Navy goal to advance to finals

Navy scores late to quell the Marine Corps’ comeback to win match five 2-1 of the 2016 Armed Forces Men’s Soccer Championship held at Fort Benning, Ga. on 11 May.

Navy Ensign Gabe Merla scored early during the 11th minute to give the sailors a halftime lead. 

As the second half started up, Marine Cpl Kyle DeSousa scored in the fourth minute (49’ overall) to tie the match. 

The Marines kept attaching, but solid Navy defense held on, then Navy went on the late offensive with PO2 Kyle Baker knocking one in to pull ahead. 

Navy’s win puts them in the Championship match versus the winner of Air Force and Army in match six.  The Championship Match is set for 13 May at Fort Benning.

The 2016 Armed Forces Championship format consists of round robin play, where each team faces one another once for seeding.  The top two best records will face one another in the championship match to claim the 2016 Armed Forces crown.
