Army seeks to defend Armed Forces Championships at Fort Carson, Colo., Mar. 27-28

By Alexandra Pernice, USA Wrestling

The U.S. Army will seek to defend its team titles at the 2015 Armed Forces Wrestling Championships, which will be held at the Special Events Center at Fort Carson, Colorado, Mar. 27-28.

Teams from the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps will be competing for bragging rights within the U.S. military. Competition will begin on Friday with Greco-Roman, and continuing with men’s and women’s freestyle on Saturday.

The Armed Forces Championships is a dual meet competition. Each of the teams will face the other three teams in dual meets in each style. In addition, individual medals are awarded based upon the results of the matches at each weight class.

This event will set the U.S. team to compete in the CISM World Military Games in Mungyeong, Korea, October 6-10.

Last year, the U.S. Army captured their 13th straight team titles in both Greco-Roman and freestyle. Army was led by Olympians Spenser Mango and Justin Lester, along with teammate Jon Anderson, who all won gold in both the Greco-Roman and freestyle competitions. All three are expected to compete again this year. Army athletes won six of the eight gold medals in each style last year, and went undefeated in dual meets.

The U.S. Marine Corps placed second in both styles last year, with two individual champions in each style. Three U.S. Marines are expected to return to defend their titles: men’s freestyle champions Aaron Kalil (61 kg) and Bryce Saddoris (65 kg), along with Greco-Roman champion David Arendt (130 kg).

There may be some challenge matches this week to determine the U.S. women athletes who will compete at the CISM World Military Championships.

The preliminary rosters have been submitted, with final rosters completed on March 26.

Fans will be able to watch both days of the action via webcast on
