(Eindhoven, Netherlands) -- The US Women returned to the podium at
the CISM World Military Marathon Championship taking silver in the women’s
division of the 46th Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) Marathon
World Military Championship 9-14 October 2014 in Eindhoven, Netherlands.
Navy Lieut. Gina Slaby (Harrisburg,
PA) led the US women with a time of 2:43:57, placing her 4th in the CISM Women’s
division and 5th overall within the Eindhoven Marathon women’s category.
The US Women finished with a team time of 8:35:45, with
Poland taking gold and Sweden earning bronze.
Poland’s women team swept the podium, with their top three runners
scoring before any other nation.
The US women continue their
top-level performance at CISM. Last year
in Suriname, the US Women captured bronze. From 2009-2010, the US won gold each
year. There were no CISM team marathon championships in 2011 or 2012.
On the men’s side, Coast Guard
Lieut. Patrick Fernandez (HQCG, Washington, DC) led the US men with a time of 2:25:11,
20th in the men’s division and 29th overall within the Eindhoven Marathon men’s
category. The US men finished 7th overall in the CISM men’s division of 17
nations with a time of 7:22:47.
Poland swept the individual
podium along with their women’s team to take team gold. Morocco earned silver and France with bronze.
The 46th CISM Marathon was held
in conjunction with the Eindhoven Marathon, featuring over 6000 runners.
The US Armed Forces Marathon Team
was selected from the top available finishers from the 2013 Armed Forces
Marathon Championship held in conjunction with the Marine Corps Marathon in
Washington, D.C.
