FORT DIX, N.J. – The deciding dual meet went down to the last match, before the U.S. Army edged the U.S. Marine Corps, 14-13, to repeat as the team champions in Greco-Roman at the Armed Forces Wrestling Championships on Saturday.

The Army opened up the deciding dual meet with four straight wins in the lighter weight classes from some of their top international stars.

With the match still up for grabs, Marine heavyweight Dave Arendt edged Erik Nye, 1-0, 1-0, scoring three team points to make the final score in favor of the Army, 14-13.

The Army defeated Air Force 26-1, then stopped Navy, 24-6, setting up the showdown with the Marines in the final round of action. The Marines also entered the final dual with a 2-0 record, after stopping Navy 23-7 and Air Force 22-7.

The Air Force placed third, after defeating the Navy 18-6 in their final dual meet.

Winning individual gold medals for the Army were their four lightweight stars, Engel at 55 kg, Mango at 60 kg, Betterman at 66 kg and Lester at 74 kg. Mango, Betterman and Lester were all competing up a weight class from their usual weight division.

The Marines swept the gold medals in the upper weight classes with Simmons at 84 kg, Fish at 96 kg and Arendt at 120 kg.

Engel is the only champion to win for the second straight time in Greco-Roman. The last Armed Forces Championships was held in November 2011 at Fort Carson, Colo., and Engel was also a champion at that event. In that November 2011 event, Army wrestlers won all seven Greco-Roman gold medals.

The competition concludes on Sunday with the men’s freestyle competition. The Army is also the defending team champion in freestyle.
