From Maryland to the Court: First Lt. Llewellyn Finds Success in Teamwork

By Cpl. Diana Salgado, War Media Activity U.S. Armed Forces Sports

"Teamwork isn’t just about working together; it’s about trusting each other enough to push through anything." U.S. Marine Corps First Lt. Lindsay Llewellyn’s words resonate deeply with her journey, one built on family support, resilience, and a passion for the game. As a first-year member of the Armed Forces sports all-women Marine Corps basketball team, she’s discovering what it truly means to unite under a common goal. Her story is about more than just basketball; it’s about overcoming challenges and the strength that comes from those who stand behind you.

As Lindsay reminisces about her childhood in Maryland she recalls always having a height advantage over her peers thanks to her family genes. "My whole family's tall. My brother's six, seven. I have sisters that are taller than me, six foot," she says with a smile. That height gave her confidence, but it was her family’s unwavering support that truly shaped her. Her family continues to cheer her on and support her from across the globe. "Even today, a couple of them watched my game, even though they're all over the place." That constant backing fuels her drive to be better, both on and off the court.

Her father played a crucial role early on, coaching her from an early age . "My dad always told me I needed a higher arc in my shot," she recalls. "He was always preaching, like, get that arc up, you know." That advice turned into her signature move, and she ended up having the highest arc on her college team. She laughs, saying, "It was kind of a running joke that I had a 48-degree shot because of how high my arcs were." Her father’s words and her family’s support taught her that sometimes, the smallest encouragement can make the biggest difference. They showed her that with teamwork and belief, she could elevate her game and herself.

Lindsay’s journey began early, around fourth grade, when her best friend convinced her to try basketball. "I started playing because I was the tallest girl in school," she admits. From that point on, her love for the game grew. "I like being perfect at things, and perfecting a shot to look the way it looks is, I guess, the most appealing thing for me for basketball," she shares. Her dedication was driven by a desire to master her craft, but her family’s words constantly reminded her that teamwork was essential. "My family always told me that I need to lean on others and build people up," she says.

Her experience at the Naval Academy from 2019 to 2023 marked a pivotal chapter. The discipline, camaraderie, and shared struggles there reinforced her belief that teamwork isn’t just for sports. "It's about leaning on others and trusting that collective effort pushes everyone forward," she emphasizes. That mindset carried her through tough days and helped her realize that leadership is rooted in collaboration.

Joining the Marine Corps has deepened her understanding of leadership through unity. "I think teamwork to me is leaning on that left and right hand, man or woman, to be able to make a decision," she explains. "You can't do everything alone; you have to trust your team." Her experiences on the court have become a blueprint for her military leadership. She recognizes that no one person can do it all, and sharing responsibility is what makes a team stronger. "It’s about building each other up and knowing that we all have a role," she says.

Her first year on the Marine Corps basketball team has been emotional and eye-opening. "It quickly turned into, like, we're sisters, you know," she says softly. "There was no rank, no hierarchy, just us playing the game we love." That bond is what she values most now. Playing alongside women who share her passion and values has shown her the true meaning of unity. "Some of these girls have played with each other before, so it’s like we’ve known each other forever," she adds. "That connection makes everything easier."

The support from her teammates has been a constant source of inspiration. "Even when I think I don’t have confidence in my shot, they’re always telling me to shoot the ball," she shares. "They have faith in me, even when I don’t." Their encouragement lifts her up during tough moments, reminding her that encouragement is vital to teamwork. "It’s a lot of little moments, those pats on the back that keep me going," she says. She believes this collective belief is what makes her and her teammates stronger.

Her experience with the Marine team has also shown her how shared challenges create unbreakable bonds. "We talk about it a lot, but we’re building the bricks," she says. "What started small is growing into something bigger." The team has expanded in interest and talent, and she’s committed to helping build that legacy. "I want to be part of something that can inspire others," she states. "To show that teamwork and support can create real change, both on and off the court."

Reflecting on her journey, Lindsay emphasizes that her true strength lies in her support system. "Support is what shapes me into the person I am today," she says. Her family’s unwavering backing and her teammates’ faith give her the resilience to face any challenge. "Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am now," she admits. She’s proof that with collective effort and genuine support, anyone can push past obstacles.

Lindsay Llewellyn’s journey is a powerful testament to the impact of teamwork and family. Her experiences reflect a deep understanding that true strength comes from unity, support, and perseverance. As she continues to lead both on the court and in her service, her story encourages others to stand together, building each other up and pushing forward, brick by brick. Her path is a reminder that no matter where you come from, your community and your teammates are the foundation for greatness.
