SAN ANTONIO, Texas –
In perfect 45-degree overcast weather, Air Force elite athletes swept the podium and the team win in the men’s division during the 2025 Armed Forces Cross Country Championship at the Windcrest Golf Club here today.
The top runners earned spots on the U.S. Armed Forces Cross Country team competing in the International Military Sports Council (CISM) Military World Winter Games in Lucerne, Switzerland, March 23-30.
Twenty-three elite female runners from the Air Force, Space Force, Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Marines kicked off the championship.
Women’s 8K
Army Sgt. Colett Rampf-Cribbs, Fort Carson, Colorado, led the pack with a time of 27:21.5 for her second Armed Forces title.
“It felt good out there. I’m still in my build up phase for the track and field season,” she said. “I knew it was going to be a tactical race. I started very conservative, behind Sullivan, and then moved up to run my own race, working progressively like my coach taught me. I finished very strong and am happy with the result.”
“I just picked up with each lap to finish the fastest at the end,” she said. Rampf-Cribbs finished the first lap, 2K, side by side with Sullivan, but then extended her lead to half a mile at the finish.
Though Rampf-Cribbs is used to competing with elites from all walks of life, she said she loves competing with her fellow service members the most.
“They work full time and yet make time to train and compete,” she said. “It’s so special, serving this country. There’s only so many people who raise their right hand to serve this country. Our main priority is to be a Soldier, Sailor, Marine, or Airman first. Seeing these phenomenal women accomplish such strong performances here, knowing they also work, deploy, serve on rotations, I have so much respect for them.”
Navy Lt. Madison Overby, Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, earned silver with a time of 28:51:2 and pace of 5:38.
“I came in not expecting much. I haven’t run any races faster than a marathon in a long time,” she said. “I went by feel and really surprised myself today.”
Overby said she kept Sullivan in her sights and had two of her teammates running near her in a pack.
“Keeping Beth in front of me and working together motivated me,” she said. “We had such a strong pack. We’re all stationed at separate bases, but we come together and get to know each other over the weekend, run together at the races and strengthen each other by being together.”
She said helping the Women’s Navy team take gold was a huge motivating factor for her pushing hard for the silver medal.
“If I slow down, I’m slowing down the team,” she said. “When you push, you’re carrying your team toward the victory”
Navy Ensign Beth Sullivan, NSA Bethesda, Maryland, took bronze with a time of 28:59:3 and pace of 5:39. Last year, she earned silver with a time of 37:31.7.
“It was a flat and fast course, and I loved having a big support crowd,” Sullivan said of her mom, brother, boyfriend, and college friends who all flew down to see her race. “They flew halfway across the country to get here. My classmates are on a medical school rotation, taking time out of their weekend to come and cheer me on, that means so much.”
“Elizabeth enjoys her running so much, and it was just wonderful to come out and support her,” Beth’s mom, Jeanne, said. “We’re cross-country groupies and follow her around wherever she’s running.”
Beth’s boyfriend, Brad Snively, said she’s one of the most impressive athletes at their school, Uniform Services University, Bethesda, Maryland.
“There’s a ton of support for her at our school,” he said. “She’s just so sweet. Everyone really likes her. Everyone’s happy to cheer for her. We’re really proud of her. We all love her.”
Air Force earned silver in the team event, with Army finishing third and Marines finished the team standings in fourth.
MEN’S 10K
By the 4K mark, Air Force Airman 1st Class Dan Michalski, Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, took the lead with a time of 12:10:2, with Air Force 2nd Lt. Ryan Johnson, Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts, right behind him at 12:10:3. A group of Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen joined them in a pack and jockeyed for the top three spots.
By the 6K mark, Air Force 1st Lt. Ryan Ioanidis, 93rd Air Refueling Squadron, Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, Washington, moved up to fourth place. Army Spc. Geoffrey Kipchumba held the second seed spot during the 6K lap, Michalski still held the lead, and Johnson was in third.
With one lap to go, Johnson took lead, Michalski slid into second, Ioanidis moved to third and Kipchumba to fourth.
As the men pushed to the 10K finish line, Michalski earned gold with a time of 29:31:8 and a pace of 4:38.
“We had a game plan to work together through the first laps and see how the race goes,” he said. “That was my focus and plan. I realized I’d be able to win as long as I was able to stay under control, continue to pick my lines well, be smart about my footing on the tighter turns and the few spots where something could hang you up if you’re not paying attention.”
He said he loved seeing Air Force take first, second and third place.
“It’s hard to know where everybody’s at with their fitness. All these guys, they’re in pilot training or have crazy schedules. It’s hard to train, and there’s a whole lot of talent across the service branches out here,” he said. “This was a great course with great conditions. I’m just grateful and happy to be out here. This is a great event to bring the services together for spirit de corps.”
“With about a mile to go, as I was pressing the downhill and into the technical curves of the course, I could count the steps after I cross the cart paths,” he said. “You don’t have to look over your shoulder. You can hear when the next person clacks their spikes into it. We realized we were getting eight steps on the guy in third, and then I realized I had eight steps on Johnson. I was encouraged by that. I focused on my rhythm and bringing it home.”
He said he loves his team, learning about each other’s backgrounds and stories and hopes to compete for the Air Force in the future.
Johnson took second with a time of 29:34:2 and a pace of 4:39.
“It was a tough competition. I wanted to run for my guys at the Air Force and get as close to the top as I could. It’s all smiles from me,” he said. “I knew Dan was going to be the guy to beat. Dylan Powell from Navy is also strong. I put myself in the pack and just held on and hoped to be stronger over the end, and that’s how it played out as the race went on. It got harder and harder. Knowing the Air Force guys were there was a huge help for me and motivated me to keep going and keep pushing.”
The Olympic Trials runner said it was a beautiful day and a beautiful course.
“I love a course that makes me hurt by the end of it because that’s why you run, to push yourself,” he said. “When you finish, it may hurt the last 10 minutes, but when you finish, you feel great. I just did something really cool.”
He said loves that the Armed Forces lets service members continue to compete at elite levels such as the World Class Athlete Program.
“If Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors and Marines are that dedicated and committed to something and can go out and show it in an athletic competition, it means they’re going to succeed and excel in their careers and pay that forward in their military roles as well,” he said.
“Anytime you’re an athlete, you’re putting in a lot of time and training, so you’re going to pay that forward to the next generation.”
Ioanidis rounded the Air Force team taking gold with a time of 29:50.5 and pace of 4:41.
Navy earned silver, Army finished third, as Marines took fourth in the men’s team category.
