Marine Corps men defeat Navy

By Jonathan Austin, Defense Media Activity U.S. Armed Forces Sports

Air Force women defeated Army during day three of the Armed Forces Basketball Championship on Sunday.

Air Force outscored Army 33-19 in the first half and never gave up their advantage, winning 66-46.

Air Force Coach James Lewis said, “I’m happy about it. We did what we’re supposed to do.” Asked about how the tournament seems keyed on strong defense, he replied, “It’s all we’ve focused on since day one.”

He said the team is adjusting due to some injuries, as might be the case with everyone.

The women’s game saw a strong performance from Senior Airman Shaquera Wade, stationed at Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas, who scored 19.

Sgt. Precious Williams scored 17 points to lead Army.

In the first men’s game of the day, Army 1st Lt. Colton Ray led the Army men with 24 points Sunday afternoon as Army defeated Air Force.

Army built a 21-point lead and secured the 78-72 victory.

Airman 1st Class Austin Parker, stationed at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, scored 14 points to lead Air Force.

The second women’s game saw 1st Lt. Kaleigh D’Arcy, stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, lead the Corps with 21 points as the Marine Corps women defeated Navy 68-60.

Coast Guard Ensign Kira Wood, stationed at Sector Houston-Galveston, Texas, scored 23 points for Navy, including five from beyond the arc.

The final game pitted the Marine Corps men against undefeated Navy, and the Corps rallied from a 14-point deficit for a gutsy, come-from-behind victory.

“I think tonight our guys decided to be a little more tough, we won a lot of 50-50 balls, we cleaned the glass up,” said Capt. Brandon Mitchell, coach of the Marines.

“I think they did a great job today.”

The Corps was led by 1st Lt. John Carter, from Camp Pendleton, California, with 25 points.

Lt. j.g. Tyler Nelson, stationed at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, scored 20 to lead the Navy.
