Air Force Women, Army Men Capture 2022 Armed Forces Golf Gold

By U.S. Armed Forces Sports U.S. Armed Forces Sports

Despite rain delays on the first day of competition, the clouds cleared the way for dominate performances by the Air Force women and Army men’s golf teams during the four-day Armed Forces Championship at the Fort Belvoir Golf Course from September 11-14.

AIR FORCE WOMEN CRUSH COMPETITION

In the opening round, Air Force women jumped up to a 11-stroke lead over Army and Navy behind Lt Col Linda Jeffery’s even par score.

With fellow teammates 1st Lt Kimberly Liu of Minot AFB, ND and Space Force Specialist 3 Cayla Clark of Schriever Space Force Base, Colo., Team Air Force never looked back finishing with a 32-stroke lead over the competition for team gold with a final score of 596.

Navy grabbed silver with a score of 628, as Army finished third.  Marine Corps did not have enough players for the team competition.

Jeffery, from Grissom AFB, Ind., captured her seventh Armed Forces title shooting 296, her first gold since 2014.

In her first Armed Forces Championship, Liu won silver with a score of 300, just four strokes behind Jeffery.  Finishing the individual podium was Lt. Cmdr. Laurel Gill of NAS Jacksonville, Fla., winning bronze with a score of 309.

ARMY MEN HAVE HUGE LAST DAY

In a much tighter competition, Army and Navy were tied on the opening day, with Air Force trailing behind by only two strokes.

On the final day of competition, Army held a narrow seven-stroke lead over Air Force.  As the golfers headed out on the course, Army turned in their best score card of the tournament shooting 362, with three players scoring below par.

Army expanded their lead by 25 strokes to win team gold with a score of 1,464.  Air Force, unable to gain momentum, took home silver with a score of 1,489.  Navy finished third followed by Marine Corps in fourth.

Army Sgt. Steve Lim of USAG Hawaii was unstoppable, shooting 15-under par and 13 strokes ahead of teammate Sgt. Kurtis Lucas of Fort Campbell, Ky., who won silver.  Air Force Staff Sgt. Justin Broussard of Robins AFB, Ga. took bronze.

The 2023 Armed Forces Golf Championship is scheduled during the last week of September next year at Naval Base San Diego, Calif., which will mark the 75th Anniversary of the first Armed Forces Golf Championship, the oldest sport within Armed Forces Sports.  Following next year’s championship, Navy will host the 14th Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) World Military Golf Championship also at Naval Base San Diego.
