Qualifying Standards for CISM Military World Games

The application period continues for the upcoming Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) Military World Games hosted in Wuhan, China from October 18-28, 2019.

The 7th edition of the Military World Games is expected to feature over 100 nations and over 9,500 athletes.  This event is the second largest multi-sporting event in the world second to only that of the Olympic Games. 

The United States Armed Forces Sports Council is projected to participate in 21 sports with a delegation of over 300 Armed Forces military personnel. 

Since February, Armed Forces Sports has conducted multiple championships to select members of various teams.  The following teams have currently been selected:

Wrestling – February 2019

Women’s Volleyball – March 2019

Men’s Soccer – April 2019

The U.S. Armed Forces Women’s Soccer Trial Camp is currently underway and will complete their roster by the 29th of April.

Golf, Basketball (Men and Women), and Triathlon will conduct championships to fulfill their rosters in May and June.  The rest of the delegation will be selected by application.

Archery:  The U.S. Armed Forces Team will only consist of Para-Archers competing in the Recurve Bow competition.  The minimum scores for a 72-Arrow Qualification Round are 540+ for men and 500+ for women. 

Judo:  Applications must contain results from sanctioned USA Judo and/or International Judo Federation (IJF) competitions within the last two years.  Applicants must meet one of the following standards below for consideration of the 7th CISM Military World Games. 

1 – Are Nationally Ranked within USA Judo (Senior Male/Female);

2 – Have competed in A+, A, or B-Level events;

3 – Have competed in the U.S. Senior Nationals (USN) or the USA Judo National Presidents Cup Championship (PRZ) and have placed in the top four or 50% percentile of your respective weight class. 

Priority will be given to athletes who are nationally ranked and/or have competed in A+, A, or B-Level events.  Those who have only competed in the one of the C-Level events above will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, with emphasis on the volume of events competed in as well as past CISM experience. 

Sailing.  The sailing portion 2019 CISM Military World Games will be extremely competitive with many nations sending their National teams.  Also, many of these participants may have Olympic experience often with the same teammate they will sail with at the Military World Games.  In order for the United States team to be competitive the following criteria have been set as the standards for application.

To be considered for the 2019 United States Armed Forces Sailing Team all applicants should possess one or more of the following criteria:

1. Collegiate Experience in dinghy’s with NCAA Championship experience

2. Be part of a past United States Olympic Sailing program

3. Be currently or within the last three years nationally ranked in dinghy’s

4. A past member of an Untied States Armed Forces Sailing team.

Swimming (Pool).  Qualifying standards for Swimming Events:  Applications must contain swimming times from sanctioned USA Swimming/NCAA competitions/US Masters Swimming within the last 18 months.  The times below are the minimum standards and reflect an average of qualifying times from five higher level competitions (2017 US Open [SCY]/Olympic trials [LCM], 2019 National Championship and Spring Sectionals, 2017-2020 National age group [A’s 17&18] and the 2019 Pacific Swimming Seniors Championship).

Lifesaving Events (Swimming Pool & Ocean):  Applications must contain the below information. Team members will be selected by application based on various skill sets.  Running, swimming, and lifesaving skills will all be factored in.  Applications must include the following:

  • Provide 5K and 10K run times in last two years
  • Provide swim times for 50m, 100m, and 200m freestyle
  • Provide times for 1500m open water swims  (Split times for open water Olympic distance triathlon competitions will be accepted)
  • Other lifesaving information such as military billets (Coast Guard/Navy SEALS)
  • Specialty water rescue equipment training and certifications

Track and Field.  Applications must contain times and/or distances from sanctioned USA Track and Field or NCAA competitions within the last 18 months.  The times and distances below are the standards for consideration to participate in the 7th CISM Military World Games.  Priority will be given to athletes achieving the ‘A’ Standards.  The ‘B’ Standards will serve as the minimum standards for applications.  Applicants who fail to meet the minimum standards will not be considered.

Para-Track and Field. Events include the 100-meters; 200-meters; 1,500-meters; and Shot Put. The Competition is limited to military personnel on active duty orders.  Competition is designed for the military para-athlete, defined as wounded, injured and ill military personnel suffering a long term physical disability as a result of their military service. 

Classifications (Track):

1) Group A – Single below the knee amputees (T44) /double below the knee amputees (T43)

2) Group B – Single above the knee amputees (T42) /double above the knee amputees (T42)

3) Group C – Upper body amputees (T45/T46), permanent upper body limb dysfunction

4) Group D – Wheelchair racing participants (T51-54).

B.  Field Classification Groups:

1) Standing Shot, which includes leg amputees; Upper body amputees, permanent upper body limb dysfunction that prevents movement of the limb. Athletes can compete standing up.

2) Sitting Shot. Wheelchair  (WC) (F31-34, F51-58).  Participants in this group are paraplegic, have minimal or no use of lower extremities, and require use of a WC for competition.
