USA Women win back-to-back golf golds; Men capture CISM Silver

Muenster, Germany   –   On top of the podium once again, the U.S. Armed Forces Women’s Golf team dominated the competition for their second straight gold with the U.S. men registering a solid performance to earn silver behind team Germany at the 12th Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) World Military Golf Championship at the Münster Tinnen Golf Club in Münster, Germany from August 26 to September 2.

In her ninth CISM Championship, Air Force Major Linda Jeffery of Maxwell AFB, Ala. returned to form and the individual medal stand for the first time since 2014 by winning silver. Jeffery is the all-time leader in CISM Golf, earning six individual gold medals along with eight team golds and team silver.

Navy Lt. Laurel Gill of Coronado, Calif. earned her second consecutive CISM bronze medal and Navy Lt. Cmdr. Nicole Johnson of NAS Lemoore, Calif. placed fourth overall. The U.S. led the competition over France by 27 strokes and bronze medal Netherlands by 102 strokes.

The U.S. women have captured nine team gold medals and a silver and bronze since golf was added as a CISM Championship in 2003.

On the men’s side, the U.S. had four players score under par, giving them a combined team score of 23 under par.

At top of the men’s podium was host Germany and France took team bronze.

Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Jacob Halligan of USCG Station Lake Worth Inlet, Fla. tied for fourth, shooting 6 below par. Army Spc. Chris Erwin of Fort Campbell, Ky. place sixth with -5; and Army Staff Sgt. Ian Milne of Fort Bragg, N.C. and Air Force Capt Andrew Fecteau of Minot AFB, N.D. tied for seventh place. Air Force Capt. Brandon Johnson of Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio filled out the top ten scoring par and Marine Lance Cpl. Cameron Jones of MCB Quantico, Va. tallied +18.

The U.S. men earned their second-straight team medal and 9th overall team medal throughout the championship’s history.

The 2018 U.S. Armed Forces Team was selected from the top available finishers of the Armed Forces Golf Championship held at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif. from July 21-25.

Armed Forces Sports is the culmination of each military service’s sports and fitness programs. Service members compete at elite levels to advance to the global stage where they seek victories in international competition. The U.S. was created in 1947 and has been a member of CISM since 1951.
