Fort Moore Opens Armed Forces Basketball Championship

By Ms. Theresa Smith, Armed Forces Sports U.S. Armed Forces Sports

The 2023 Armed Forces Basketball Championship opened with a men’s Air Force win over the Army, 61-56. Despite the Army going on a 12-point run to take the lead going into halftime, the Air Force came back and went on a 12-2 run and claimed the first win of the Championship.

The women’s Army team was determined not to suffer the same fate. After eight lead changes they emerged victorious over the Air Force 69-56. Though the Army was trailing going into halftime they went on an eight point run to close the gap and then a 15-2 run to take the lead and capture the win.

The Navy men defeated the Marine Corps, 107-86. It was an exciting back and forth lead change with the Navy eventually going on an eight-point run to take the lead and then 15-2 run to pull ahead and secure the win.

The women’s Navy team followed up with a victory of their own over the Marine Corps, 75-53, closing out Day 1 play. Initially trailing and going on a 10-point run to take the lead, the Marines could not keep hold off the Navy who ended up pulling away on a 12-1 run securing their victory.
