U.S. Army wins Armed Forces Greco-Roman title with eight champs; 10 athletes qualify for Olympic Trials

By Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling U.S. Armed Forces Sports

The U.S. Army was dominant in defending its Armed Forces Greco-Roman title, winning two lopsided dual meets and claiming eight individual champions.

In the championship dual meet, Army won all 10 matches for a 44-1 decision over the U.S. Air Force. The early matches of the dual meet were competitive, before the Army team opened up with bonus point wins in the final seven bouts.

The craziest bout came right off the bat at 55 kg, when PFC William Sullivan edged. SrA Mitch Brown, 7-6. Both athletes had some big throws in the match. Sullivan led 7-1 in the second period, after a challenge by Army was upheld and changed a scoring throw for Brown. In the final seconds, Brown apparently scored two four-point throws and got a stepout for a 10-7 win. However, the final four-pointer by Brown was challenged and the scoring changed, giving Sullivan a one-point win.

After SPC Dalton Duffield scored a technical fall at 60 kg, the battle at 63 kg between SPC Dalton Roberts of the Army and 2d Lt Sidney Flores of the U.S. Air Force was very competitive. The first period ended 5-5, but in the second period, Roberts, a two-time Senior World Team member, was able to turn and pin Flores.  After 2LT Peter Ogunsanya (67 kg) won his match by disqualification, the Army scored pins and technical falls the rest of the way.

Army’s first match was a 33-11 win over the U.S. Navy, winning eight of 10 bouts, with six bonus point wins. Securing pins for the Army were SPC Dalton Roberts (63 kg) and SPC Timothy Young (97 kg). The Army won the first seven matches of the dual meet, putting it out of reach for the Navy. Olympian GySgt John Stefanowicz (87 kg) and Capt Courtney Freeman (125) were the Navy winners.

In the first match of the day, the U.S. Air Force defeated the U.S. Army, 23-18. The U.S. Air Force opened with four straight wins in the light weights, including technical falls by SrA Mitch Brown (55 kg), 2d Lt Sidney Flores (63 kg) and Capt Brian Friery (63 kg). After a Navy win, 2d Lt Vincent Dolce (77 kg) added another technical fall. Navy ran off two wins, but SSgt Diante Cooper (97 kg) clinched the team win with a technical fall.

Claiming gold medals for the U.S. Army were Sullivan, Duffield, Roberts, Ogunsanya and Young, plus SGT Ellis Coleman at 72 kg, PFC Justus Scott at 77 kg and SPC Kamal Bey (82 kg). Coleman is a past Olympian and World Team member and Bey is a World Team member. Sullivan and Scott repeated as Armed Forces Greco-Roman champions.

The other individual gold medals went to athletes on the Navy team, past Olympian Stefanowicz and Capt Courtney Freeman (130 kg). Both Stefanowicz and Freeman serve in the U.S. Marine Corps. Freeman repeated as Armed Forces champion.

The event was a qualifier for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials at Penn State, April 19-20. In each weight class, an athlete must place in the top two of the individual standings to be eligible. If the champion had not yet qualified, that wrestler advanced to the Olympic Trials. If the champion had already qualified for the Olympic Trials, the runner-up received the spot in the Trials.

Champions Sullivan, Duffield and Ogunsanya advanced to the Olympic Trials. Runners-up who advanced to the Olympic Trials were 2d Lt Sidney Flores of the U.S. Air Force (63 kg), Capt. Jamel Johnson of the U.S. Navy/USMC (72 kg), 2d Lt Vincent Dolce of the U.S. Air Force (77 kg), Sgt Marciano Ali of the U.S. Navy/USMC (82 kg), SPC Ryan Epps of the U.S. Army (87 kg), SSgt Diante Cooper of the U.S. Air Force (97 kg) and CPT Jermiah Imonode of the U.S. Army (130 kg).

The competition continues Sunday with the men’s and women’s freestyle tournament. The U.S. Army is the defending champion in men’s freestyle. Competition begins at 11:00 a.m. MT, and will be live on FloWrestling. https://www.flowrestling.org/live/95587
