Army women and Navy men dominate the 2023 Armed Forces Marathon Championship

By Mr. Steven Dinote, U.S. Armed Forces Sports U.S. Armed Forces Sports

Under clouds and humidity, the 48th edition of the Marine Corps Marathon celebrated the 25th Anniversary of hosted the Armed Forces Marathon Championship in Washington, D.C. Sunday, October 29.

Despite the conditions, Navy Lt. Commander Patrick Hearn of Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard finished second overall in the Marine Corps Marathon and topping the podium of the Armed Forces Championship with an impressive time of 2:26:19.

Hearn’s Navy teammate, Lt. Commander Jordan Tropf of Walter Reed Medical Center finished second, with Army Capt. Samson Mutua of Fort Bliss, Texas took bronze.

In the women’s division, Army darted to the finish line scoring 1st Lt. Kristen Gray of Fort Meade, Maryland and 2nd lt. Haley Seaward of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri to capture gold and silver, and solidify their team standing over the field.

In her first marathon ever, but no stranger to Armed Forces Championships, Marine Corps Capt Mollie Geyer won bronze.

Geyer who has won multiple Armed Forces Triathlon Championships, was asked three weeks ago to compete with the Marine Corps women. Her max distance up until Sunday was only 13 miles.

In the team competitions, both Army and Navy returned to the top of the podium since 2018.

Navy women won silver, followed by the Marines and Air Force.

For the men, Air Force claimed silver, with Army and Marine Corps trailing behind.

This year’s championship awards were presented by Lt. Gen. Edward Banta, Deputy Commandant for Installations and Logistics.

The Marine Corps Marathon is the largest marathon in the world that does not offer prize money, and the fourth largest marathon in the United States.

In addition to the Armed Forces Championship, the Marine Corps and Royal Navy/Marines compete in the annual Challenge Cup. The men’s race was first introduced in 1978, with the women establishing roots in 1998.

This year, the Royals won the men’s competition and the Marine Corps women continued their title reign.
