2020 ARMED FORCES RESULTS CHANGED AFTER ATHLETE DISQUALIFIED; MUELLER QUALIFIES FOR OLYMPIC TRIALS; MARINES WIN GRECO-ROMAN TITLE

By Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling & Armed Forces Sports U.S. Armed Forces Sports

Armed Forces Sports has notified USA Wrestling that an athlete who participated in the 2020 Armed Forces Wrestling Championships has had his results disqualified, thus changing the outcome of the competition, which was held at Naval Station Kitsap, Wash. from February 20-24.

On July 28, 2020, the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) announced that Sergeant Vladyslav Dombrovskiy of the U.S. Army "accepted a four-year suspension for a violation involving his possession and use or attempted use of prohibited substances (per the World Anti-Doping Agency List of Prohibited Substances) and his refusal to provide a urine sample.  Dombrovskiy’s four-year period of ineligibility began on March 10, 2020, the date he admitted using prohibited substances. In addition, Dombrovskiy has been disqualified from competitive results obtained on and subsequent to July 1, 2019, the approximate date on which he first possessed a prohibited substance, including forfeiture of any medals, points and prizes."

In compliance with the USADA's decision, Dombrovskiy's results have been disqualified.  Dombrovskiy competed at 77 kg in Greco-Roman and 79 kg in men’s freestyle. His disqualification changes the individual medals in those weight classes, the results of the dual meets in which the athlete participated, as well as the team standings in Greco-Roman.

The Armed Forces Greco-Roman competition served as a qualifying event for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. The disqualification also changed which athlete at 77 kg qualifies for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Capt Brandon Mueller (U.S. Air Force) is now recognized by USA Wrestling as the athlete who qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials at 77 kg in Greco-Roman

According to the USA Wrestling Athlete Selection Procedures for 2020 Olympic Games in Greco-Roman:
2020 U.S. Armed Forces Championships February 2020
The highest placed Senior Greco‐Roman USA athlete, per weight category, winning a medal, who has yet to qualify, will qualify for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials ‐ Wrestling. *Only Gold and Silver medals awarded.

The Greco-Roman medal standings at 77 kg have been changed, with Capt. Payton Walsh of the U.S. Marine Corps earning the gold medal and Capt Brandon Mueller of the U.S. Air Force receiving the silver medal. Walsh had already qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, so the silver medalist, Mueller, is now the Olympic Trials qualifier.

In freestyle, the changes in the individual medals awarded have 2d Lt John Hagey (U.S. Air Force) as the new silver medalist at 79 kg. There is no change to the gold medalist. The men’s freestyle competition at the Armed Forces Championships is not part of the qualifying process for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in wrestling.

The final scores of all of the dual meets in both the Greco-Roman and men’s freestyle tournaments in which the U.S. Army participated have been changed, reflecting the disqualification.

In Greco-Roman, the score of the round three dual meet between the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps has changed which team won the dual meet. The updated dual meet score is U.S. Marine Corps 24, U.S. Army 18. Prior to the disqualification, the U.S. Army had been the winner of that dual meet.

Armed Forces Sports has awarded the U.S. Marine Corps the Greco-Roman team champions. The U.S. Marine Corps now finishes the Armed Forces Greco-Roman Championships with a 3-0 record. The U.S. Army now has a 2-1 record in the Greco-Roman tournament, putting them in second place.

Even with the changes, the U.S. Army remains the Armed Forces freestyle champion and also still outscored the Marine Corps in the overall team standings.

Updated Results:

FINAL TEAM STANDINGS:
1st Place - Army (8 Dual Meet points)*
2nd Place – Marine Corps (8 Dual Meet points)*
3rd Place – Air Force (4 Dual Meet points)
4th Place – Navy (0 Dual Meet points)
