Army, Marines are 2-0 and will battle for Greco-Roman title at Armed Forces Championships this afternoon

By Mr. Gary Abbott - USA Wrestling Armed Forces Sports

The first session of the 2018 Armed Forces Wrestling Championships at Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C. is in the books, and the favored teams, the defending champion U.S. Army and the host U.S. Marines Corps, have gone 2-0, and will meet for the team title in the next session.

The Army, winner of 16 straight titles, won every individual bout in their two victories, defeating the U.S. Navy 40-1 and stopping the U.S. Air Force, 39-1.

The U.S. Marine Corps were also dominant in their victories, stopping the U.S. Air Force 31-11 and the U.S. Navy 38-6.

The second session of the event will pit the U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps for first place, and the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force for third place.

In addition to determining the team placements, individual medals in each of the 10 weight classes will be determined in that final session.

The four returning Armed Forces Greco-Roman champions from the U.S. Army are undefeated after two rounds,
SPC Ildar Hafizov at 60kg/132.2 lbs., SPC Ellis Coleman at 72kg/158.7 lbs., 2LT Michael Hooker at 77kg/169.7 lbs. and 2LT Toby Erickson at 130kg/286.6 lbs.

Coleman and Hafizov are past Olympians. Coleman wrestled for the United States in 2012 London Games, and Hafizov represented Uzbekistan at the 2008 Beijing Games.

The top three placewinners in Greco-Roman qualify to compete at the U.S. Greco-Roman World Team Trials in Tulsa, Okla., June 21-22.
