By Armed Forces Sports Armed Forces Bowling

Hosting the 2016 Armed Forces Bowling Championship at Travis AFB, Calif., Air Force took first place in the men’s and women’s team and daily challenge events at the annual championship held May 11-13.

Air Force women dethroned defending champions Army with an overwhelming 20,963 total pins to Army’s 16,296 pins.  Navy placed third overall with 15,134 pins.

Army Staff Sgt. Rose Brown of Fort Bliss, Texas won her third consecutive Armed Forces Women’s Bowling individual title, throwing for a total pin count of 4,530.  Air Force Tech. Sgt. Natasha Sanchez of Kunsan Air Base, South Korea brought home silver with 4,408 pins.  Air Force Master Sgt. Kristin Odekirk of Hurlburt Field, Fla. scored 4,301 pins for the bronze medal.

On the men’s side, Air Force Master Sgt. Joshua Chambliss of Little Rock AFB, Ark. lead Air Force to their second straight Armed Forces Men’s Bowling title. Chambliss took the overall men’s title with 4,771 pins, lifting them to gold with a total team score of 18,473 pins.  Army took silver with 17,668 pins followed by Navy (17,551 pins) and Marine Corps (16,852 pins) placing third and fourth respectively.

Followed by Chambliss on the podium for the clean sweep were fellow Air Force bowlers Airman 1st Class Joshua Cramer of Kunsan AB, South Korea (4,665 pins) and Master Sgt. John Hughes of Elmendorf AFB, Alaska (4,521 pins) winning the silver and bronze respectively.

The Air Force took first place in all other daily challenge competitions except for the King and Queen Challenge. The flying high bowlers in blue won the Women’s Team Challenge; the Men’s Team Challenge; Mixed Double Challenge (Sanchez and Chambliss); Women’s Doubles Challenge (Sanchez and Ibarra); and Men’ Doubles Challenge (Hughes and Chambliss) where they edged out the Army by a single pin (2,331 pins to 2,230 pins).

Army’s Brown defended her King and Queen Challenge crown for the second year in a row, dominating the men’s overall champion Chambliss by a score of 222 pins to 199.

The Armed Forces Bowling Championship features the best bowlers through the Service branches.  Each Service conducted a qualification round to represent their branch at Travis AFB prior to the Armed Forces Championship.
