The 2026 Armed Forces Men’s Soccer Championship reached a dramatic conclusion April 3, at Phantom Warrior Field, Fort Hood, Texas, where the United States Army emerged victorious in a hard-fought 2-1 win over the United States Air Force, capping off a week defined by intensity, pride, and elite competition.

The day opened with a high-energy consolation match between the Navy and Marine Corps. Navy set the tone early, controlling possession and applying relentless pressure.

Just 11 minutes into the first half, Navy broke through with a stunning long-range strike from roughly 35 yards out.

The momentum continued as Navy added two more goals, building a commanding 3-0 lead.

The Marines showed resilience in the second half, cutting the deficit to 3-1. However, Navy quickly answered with a penalty kick conversion in the 69th minute to extend the lead to 4-1. A late Marine goal narrowed the score to 4-2, but Navy held firm to secure third place.

Attention then shifted to the championship showdown between Army and Air Force, a matchup that delivered on its promise from the opening whistle.

Both teams displayed disciplined, high-level play throughout the match. Army struck first, capitalizing on a key opportunity to take the lead, but Air Force responded with an equalizer that kept the contest tight and the crowd engaged.

As the match wore on, Army maintained composure under pressure and found the decisive go-ahead goal to claim a 2-1 advantage. Despite a late surge from Air Force, Army’s defense stood strong, holding the line through the final whistle to secure the championship.

Beyond the action on the pitch, the event highlighted the dedication of those behind the scenes.

“I wasn’t really into soccer before last year, but being out here and experiencing it, I really got into it,” said Toni Kornegay, a sports specialist with MWR, reflecting on her second year supporting the tournament.

Sarah Galon, a program analyst with the Army’s Sports, Fitness, and Aquatics office, emphasized the event’s broader impact.

“I’m mostly excited seeing the Army win gold, but also the camaraderie between the teams,” Galon said. “It’s always a great event when you have each service here participating.”

During the closing ceremony, Fort Hood commander Col. Mark McClellan praised the athletes’ efforts and the competitive spirit displayed throughout the week.

“The servicemembers here represent the best of the armed forces,” McClellan said. “This reflects years of hard work, professionalism, and commitment to excellence. You make us all proud.”

When the final standings were announced, Navy secured third place, Air Force claimed silver, and Army received gold as the 2026 Armed Forces Men’s Soccer Champions.

For the Army, the victory was the culmination of weeks of preparation and determination.

“What happened today was the result of three weeks of hard work, three-a-days, and I think the guys came out and showed that they wanted to make a statement,” said Raul Almendarez, head coach of the All-Army Men’s Soccer Team. “On behalf of the program, we appreciate all the support from MWR and the fans. It motivated us to push through.”

With a 2-1 victory in the final, Army not only secured gold but also delivered a statement performance, embodying resilience, unity, and the enduring spirit of competition.
