2026 Armed Forces Soccer Championship Kicks Off at Fort Hood

By SrA Trust Tate U.S. Armed Forces Sports

The 2026 Armed Forces Men’s Soccer Championship opened with intensity, drama, and a statement performance from the defending champions as military athletes from across the services took to the pitch at Phantom Warrior Stadium.

This event will be hosted throughout the week at Fort Hood from March 28 through April 3; an annual tournament bringing together top talent from the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Department of the Navy (including Coast Guard), and Department of Air Force (including Space Force). Organized under the Department of War’s Armed Forces Sports program, the event highlights elite competition while promoting readiness, resilience, and camaraderie among service members.

Before kickoff, Fort Hood commander Col. Mark McClellan addressed the players, setting the tone for the week ahead.

“We look forward to witnessing your skill, passion and determination that brought you all here today,” McClellan said. “Best of luck to each team and may this championship be filled with competitive excellence, camaraderie and unforgettable moments.”

The opening match delivered immediate drama as the Army and Marine Corps battled through a physical, hard-fought contest. Both sides created chances but remained deadlocked at 0–0 throughout the match.

During the final minutes of  overtime, however, the Army broke through—netting the game-winning score to secure a 1–0 victory and an early tournament upset.

The result reflected weeks of preparation, according to U.S. Army assistant coach Sgt. 1st Class Victor Sanchez.

“We had three and a half weeks of trial camp, bringing thirty players from different Army bases together to compete for the 18 spots on our roster,” Sanchez said. “A lot of these guys played professionally internationally as well as Division I in college, so training was intense.”

In the second match of the day, the defending champion Air Force team showed why they remain the team to beat.

Controlling possession and dictating tempo from the opening whistle, Air Force struck twice before halftime against Navy and never looked back. Despite Navy’s effort to regroup in the second half, Air Force maintained its composure and defensive structure to close out a 2–0 victory.

The performance echoes their dominant 2025 campaign, where they went undefeated en route to the championship.

With opening-day results setting the stage, the competition continues Monday, March 30, with Army facing Navy at 5 p.m. and the Marine Corps taking on Air Force in another critical matchup at 7 p.m.

As the tournament unfolds, the Armed Forces Men’s Soccer Championship continues to embody the warrior ethos—blending elite athleticism with pride, discipline, and service—while delivering high-level soccer and unforgettable moments on the pitch.
