Armed Forces Sports to Celebrate 75 years of Golf

By Ms. Theresa Smith, Armed Forces Sports U. S. Armed Forces Sports

Forty five service members from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard will tee off at Admiral Baker Golf Course on Sep. 20 officially kicking off the 75th Armed Forces Sports Golf Championship.

This year’s host, Naval Base San Diego, brings the golf championship back to its roots as the very first golf championship was hosted by the Navy in Pebble Beach, Calif. in 1948. The tournament has been held annually since, making it the longest running sport within the Armed Forces Sports Program. Spectators 75 years ago could expect to see male service members from the Army, Air Force and Navy participate, as the Marines were still part of the Navy. This year every service, to include Coast Guard and Space Force, will be represented in both men and women’s play.

The Championship will feature 72 hole medal play over four days. Each service will have teams of six men and three women selected by qualification rounds prior to the Armed Forces Golf Championship.

Following the championship the top six men and top three women will go on to represent the United States at the CISM, or the International Military Sports Council, Championship also hosted at Naval Base San Diego Oct. 1-8 where they will compete against 16 nations.

The Armed Forces Sports Program was officially established in 1948 to ensure that the United States Armed Forces was appropriately represented in national and international sports competitions. The program serves as the culmination of each branch of Services’ sports and fitness program.  Service members participate and compete at unit level intramurals and advance to the All-Service level. When selected, Service members are placed on temporary duty by their respective Service to train and compete in Armed Forces Sports events.  Today the program conducts more than 20 championships each year and supports participation in many high-level sporting competitions to include CISM, Olympics and Paralympics, Nationals and Military World Games.
