At the end of the first round of the 2017 Armed Forces Men's and Women's Basketball Championship, there is a three-way tie in the men's tournament and Navy women remain the only undefeated team.
Marine Corps served Air Force their first loss of the tournament, ending the game 77-65.
U.S. Marine Corps 1st Lt. Kevin Alter, assigned to MCAS Miramar, scored 23 points. U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Montonio Kenan, assigned to MCB Okinawa, scored 20 points.
Air Force 1st Lt. Justin Hammonds, assigned to March ARB, made 14 points and 16 rebounds. Air Force Capt. Michael Lyons, assigned to Peterson AFB, Colo., scored 18 points.
Women’s Air Force topped the Marine Corps 75-47. U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Apiphany Woods, assigned to Moody AFB, scored 15 points. U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Shelbi Abreu-Rodriguez, assigned to MCB Camp Pendleton, Calif., scored 14 points.
Army took an early lead and held on to it for the rest of the game to get the win over Navy 84-71. U.S. Army Capt. Ella Ellis, assigned to Fort Sill, Okla., made six three pointers and put up a total of 30 points.
Navy Airman Deonte Jones, assigned to USS Essex (LHD-2), scored 12 points.
Women’s Army and Navy were both undefeated for the tournament going into their match, and Navy remains the only team to remain undefeated after going up against every other branch. The final score was 90-84.
U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Shaniqua Bennett, assigned to CGCIS Region West, Calif., scored 18 points and made 12 rebounds for the Navy women.
U.S. Army Sgt. Donita Adams, assigned to Maryland Army National Guard, scored 24 points.
The 2017 Armed Forces Championship format consists of double round robin play, where each team faces one another twice for seeding. The top two best records will face one another in the championship match to claim the 2017 Armed Forces crown.
