Air Force wins 2017 Armed Forces Women's Volleyball Title; Stage set for World Championship

By Armed Forces Sports Armed Forces Sports

After losing their opening match against host Navy, Air Force was victorious in their next five to capture gold in the 2017 Armed Forces Women’s Volleyball Championship aboard Naval Base Mayport, Florida from 17-21 May.

Splitting the competition in the triple-round robin tournament, Air Force and Navy faced each other for the gold after Navy’s hard fought come-back against Army in the previous match.

Air Force topped Navy winning three sets to one and finished Army off in the final match of the tournament.

Navy finished with a 3-3 record to win silver and Army finished 1-5.

Immediately following the last match, Service representatives and coaches assembled for the selection of the U.S. Armed Forces Women’s Volleyball team that will compete against four other nations at the Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) World Women’s Military Volleyball Championship, also hosted at Naval Base Mayport from 2-11 June.

The 18th edition of the CISM championship will feature teams from Canada, China, Germany, Netherlands and host nation USA.

Now that the Armed Forces Championship has concluded, the U.S. women will immediately work to bring home a medal by traveling to Minneapolis, Minn. to compete at the U.S. Volleyball National Championship in order to train and compete together as one team prior to CISM.

Founded in 1948, CISM’s 136-member nations makes it the largest military organization in the world and the second largest multisport organization after the International Olympic Committee.
