Air Force Men and Army Women dominate 2019 Armed Forces Golf

By Mr. Steven Dinote, U.S. Armed Forces Sports Secretariat U.S. Armed Forces Sports

In a shear display of dominance, Air Force men seized the top five positions as Army women won with a 54-stroke lead during the 2019 Armed Forces Golf Championship held at the Falcon Dunes Golf Course at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona from May 15-18.

After round one, the Armed Forces Men’s championship was tight between Air Force, Navy and Army as only three-strokes separated first through third place.

During round two, Air Force extended their lead by 22-strokes and never turned back. In the end, Air Force returned to the top of the podium to capture their eighth team title in ten years.

Air Force finished the four-round tournament with a score of 1369, an astonishing 51 below par. Five of the Air Force golfers finished the championship below par.

Army, the 2018 champs, won team silver scoring 1444. Navy finished third with a score of 1457 and Marines in fourth scoring 1472.

Air Force Capt. Kyle Westmoreland of the U.S. Air Force Academy, led the charge scoring 271 (-13) followed by teammates Capt. Andrew Fecteau of Minot AF, N.D. with a score of 272 (-12) and Capt. Brandon Johnson of Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio registering a score of 273 (-11) to top the podium of the men’s championship.

On the women’s side, Army returned to the top of the podium since 2016 with a controlling score of 623 to win team gold over the Air Force.

Air Force recorded 677 for silver, as Marine Corps scored 748 for third place. Navy did not field a women’s team this year.

Army’s win came by the leading play of returning champion 2nd lt. Melanie DeLeon of U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria (Grafenwöhr), Germany.

DeLeon won the 2017 Armed Forces Championship during her debut performance. After taking a year-off, DeLeon returned to the top of the podium now winning gold in her two performances.

Veteran golfer Air Force Lt. Col. Linda Jeffery of Maxwell AFB, Alabama took silver scoring 309 and 2018 champion Navy Lt. Laurel Gill of Naval Air Station North Island, Calif. rounding out the podium with a score of 315.

The 2019 Armed Forces Golf Championship also served as the selection event for the U.S. Armed Forces Golf Team that will compete in the 7th Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) Military World Games held in Wuhan, China from October 18-28, 2019.

Westmoreland, Fecteau and Johnson will be joined by Air Force Senior Airman Jacoby Chappa of Aviano Air Base, Italy, Air Force Staff Sgt. Dalton Dishman of Fairchild AFB, Wash. and Army Spc. Chris Erwin of Fort Campbell, Ky to complete the men’s roster.

DeLeon, Jeffery and Gill will make up the women’s roster, who will be looking to capture their third-straight CISM gold medal.
