The United States Armed Services team had more on their mind then just winning Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals at the 43rd World Military Track & Field Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria from 6-13 June 2009.  They had the mind set to ensure that the image of the United States was presented in proper image like the United States Olympic Basketball team did in Beijing, China.

On 5 June 2009, US military members set out on a mission to represent the United States in a competition of showmanship and professionalism on their shoulders with medals going to the member or country whose athletes were the best.

Seventeen service members represented the United States well on the field of competition as well as off in front of 31 nations competing at the Games…Iran, China, Pakistan, Algeria, India, Serbia, Uzbekistan, Morocco, and Jordan to name a few.

The purpose of the games were to develop friendly relations between the Armed Forces of member nations, support less privileged members in the name of friendship and solidarity, contribute towards the balanced and harmonious development of military personnel, and contribute to the international effort for universal peace.

First Lieutenant Nathaniel Garcia, Army World Class Athlete Program, Fort Carson, Colorado, won the Bronze medal in the men’s 400-meter Hurdles and was the only US member to medal at the games.

Three other US members finished in the top eight:  Sergeant Golden C. Coachman, Army World Class Athlete Program, Fort Carson, Colorado qualified for the finals in the men’s 800-meter and placed 4th with a time of 1:48.20,  First Lieutenant Paul Gensic, 366 CPTS, Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho finished 4th in the men’s pole vault, and Technical Sergeant Latisha Moulds, 175 MSF, Warfield Air Nation Guard Base, Maryland qualified for the finals in the women’s 200-meter and place 7th and PR’s with a season best of 24.82 seconds.

As with any competition, the goal is to come away with as many medals as possible.  The US came away with more than medals these games, they came away with new friendships with military members from other nations who otherwise they would have never got the chance to meet.

Results from the games can be located at http://www.cism-worldathletics2009.com/
