Fort Indiantown Gap, PA hosted the recent Armed Forces Taekwondo Team Trials this past Saturday June 19, 2010. This competition consisted of Taekwondo athletes representing the US Navy, US Air Force, US Marine Corps, and the US Army. These athletes had been training at the central Pennsylvania base since early June in a joint Services Training Camp hosted by Army.

The event was sanctioned by USA Taekwondo (USAT) and was an official qualifier for the USAT National Championships to be conducted over Fourth of July weekend in Orlando, FL.  It also served as a vehicle to select the Armed Forces Taekwondo Team that will represent the United States of America at the 19th World Military (CISM) Taekwondo Championships, to be held in July in Quebec, Canada.

Former All-Army Taekwondo Team Captain, Eric Laurin returned to his roots with the Army Taekwondo program representing USA Taekwondo by overseeing the conduct of the championship.  Mr. Laurin competed in the Army and CISM programs during his years in the Army and now serves on the Board of Directors at USA Taekwondo and as the Athlete Representative to the US Olympic Committee.

Dr. Jason Han, USA Taekwondo Athlete Representative, addressed athletes and spectators during the half-time break.  Also during the break, Mr. Gerard Robbins, founder of the Official Taekwondo Hall of Fame conducted ceremonies inducting Mr. Paul Boltz, former All-Army Sports representative, into the Official Taekwondo Hall of Fame.  Mr. Boltz was recognized for the many contributions he made to expand the sport of taekwondo within the military program.  He is the first inductee representing the military for the organization.

The crowd of spectators at the Blue Mountain Arena was treated to many spirited matches that were all excellent displays of Taekwondo skills. The results of the competition are as follows:

Athletes qualified for USA Taekwondo National Championships- SSG Gilbert JOHNSON (US Army- Fort Carson, CO); CPT Punnarin KOY (US Army Reserves); CPL Terry HILL (USMC-Atlanta, GA); SGT William RIDER (US Army- Fort Carson, CO); A1C Chris MOORE (USAF-Scott AFB, IL); PFC Rodney JOHNSON (US Army-Fort Sam Houston, TX); SSG Quinton BEACH (USAF-Aviano AB, Italy); Capt Ascenzo BONITATI (USAF-Pensacola, FL); SSG Jonathan FENNELL (US Army-Fort Carson, CO); SPC Gregory SHEPHERD (US Army Reserves); CPT Alexander WHITE (US Army-Fort Carson, CO); SGT Brian BIVIANO (USAF-Griffiss AFB, NY); CPL Michael KING (USMC-Washington, DC); 1LT Steven OSTRANDER (US Army-Fort Carson); SCPO William NESBIT (US Navy-Port Hueneme, CA)

Information compiled by Kenneth Polk, Armed Forces Sports

The U.S. Armed Forces Taekwondo Team participated in the CISM (World Military) Taekwondo Championship in Seoul, Korea 21-29 May 08. 35 countries participated. A team of seven competitors from Iraq participated in the event for the first time since their 15-member taekwondo team was kidnapped and killed in May 2006.

The Iraqi team was coached by Grand Master Sung Bok Nam, from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania -- a long-time good friend of Army and Armed Forces Taekwondo. He came as an Observer for the Iraqi Team 2 years ago to the CISM Taekwondo Championship in Korea. He is currently a Concessionaire in Iraq.

Upon arrival at the military base in Korea, Grand Master Nam asked if his team could train for the evening with the American team. Our team willingly agreed, and both teams conducted a joint practice later that evening. Even with significant language barriers prevailing, Mr. Patrice Remarck and Ms. Missy Cann, coaches for the U.S. Team, offered assistance in technique and skills to the Iraqi personnel. Most of these Iraqi Soldiers had only been competing in the sport for about six months.

Mid-tournament, on a free day, both the U.S. and Iraqi teams traveled by bus and subway as a group to the Itaewon shopping area under the direction of CW2 Bongseok Kim from the U.S. Team. We traveled as a group from the base to the shopping area and then met up again for the return trip.

While no Iraqi soldier won a match, they epitomized the motto of "Friendship through Sport" and the team was awarded the Encouragement Award for the tournament.

Featherweight Spc. Donovan Rider, right, throws a kick at Sgt. Dennis Bekkers of the Netherlands during the 18th Military World Tae Kwon Do Championship on Monday. Rider lost the match, 6-4.

The U.S. All Armed Forces Tae Kwon Do team fought its way to a fourth-place finish in a worldwide military tournament in Seoul that ended Tuesday.

Two of the nine team members took medals, battling against the best military fighters from 36 other countries during the 18th annual Conseil International du Sport Militaire’s World Military Tae Kwon Do Championship at the Korean Armed Forces Athletic Corps Complex in Seoul that began Friday.

Army Staff Sgt. David Bartlett took his gold medal in the welterweight division without a single kick during the final match.

Bartlett beat competitors from South Korea, Cyprus, Russia and Greece before facing Italian Carlo Molfepta, who forfeited the match.

Bartlett, and other tournament officials, said they

thought Molfepta, who plans to compete in the Olympics, may have forfeited to avoid injury.

"My style of fighting would have really injured him," Bartlett said. "But who bows out in the finals?"

In the women’s flyweight division, Seaman Jaime Houston came back from a 5-4 loss against a German opponent to beat her Kazakh foe 2-1 for the bronze medal.

Houston said she thought she could have done better, but was pleased with third place.

"It feels good to be in the spotlight a little bit," she said.

The team is composed mostly of soldiers assigned to the Army World Class Athlete Program in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Most lost in the early rounds of competition.

Coach PatriceRemarck said the team has skilled fighters, but they lack international experience.

"You could have skill, but you need to be seasoned," he said.

Team captain Bartlett was optimistic about future competitions.

"This is a young team — a new team, which in the future will be a strong team," he said.

CISM: ‘Fostering friendship through sport’

SEOUL — One of the largest sports organizations in the world, the Counseil International du Sport Militaire is composed of 131 member nations dedicated to "fostering friendship through sport."

CISM, which organizes competitive sporting events between military forces, was founded Feb. 18, 1948, by representatives from Belgium, Denmark, Luxemburg, France and the Netherlands.

By 1950 the organization had grown to include nine European nations as well as Argentina and Egypt. The United States joined in 1951.

In 1995 CISM hosted 127 member nations at the first Military World Games in Rome, which featured more than 4,000 military athletes participating in 17 sports.

Since then the Military World Games have taken place every four years at locations around the world. The next is scheduled to take place in Brazil in 2011.

Source: CISM Web Site.

The U.S. team finished behind South Korea, Iran and Italy.

Competitors fought through three two-minute rounds per match, scoring points for strikes to the chest and head.

The next CISM Tae Kwon Do tournament is slated to take place in Vietnam in 2009.
