U.S. Army Garrison, Hawaii, Public Affairs
Jan. 11, 2008
SCHOFIELD BARRACKS — The 2008 Armed Forces Bowling Championship, hosted by U.S. Army Garrison, Hawaii, concluded its weeklong competition with an awards ceremony at the Nehelani here, Friday.
Two four-man teams – one male and one female – from each branch of service battled through four grueling days for coveted titles in the team challenge, doubles, mixed doubles and singles events.
In the men’s category, the Navy took top honors, winning three of the four events: the team challenge, doubles and mixed doubles competitions.
“This is unheard of for the Navy,” said Roy Yamanuha, Navy team coach. “We have a lot of gold this year.”
Making the Navy sweat, the Air Force stayed right in its wake, placing second in the men’s doubles, men’s team challenge and mixed doubles competitions.
While the Air Force, which has gathered the most gold in the competition for the past six years, didn’t live up to their esteemed reputation in the men’s events, the women were another story.
The Air Force dominated the women’s events, winning first place medals in the team challenge, doubles and singles.
Air Force Team Coach Charles Hall was pleased, but not surprised by the outcome.
“The women are always strong at these competitions,” said Hall.
The highlight of the week for the Marine Corps came in the final day of the competition.
