The Armed Forces Women’s Basketball Team participated in the “2009 Tournament of Stars”, 7-8 August in Lake Charles, LA and finished with a 2-2 record in the double elimination tourney.

Women Championship

Air Force SrA Williamina Folks in action against the Untouchables

In their first game against the Louisiana Elite, they were down by 5 at the half, but pulled back to within 1 with 40 seconds remaining.  Army Spec. Aquanita Burras’ two successful free throws with 14 seconds left put the Forces ahead and the Elite couldn’t score again.  Navy’s YN3 Syreeta Drayton led the Armed Forces ladies with 12 points and 7 rebounds – 8 of her points were consecutive scores in the first half.  Army’s Burras also tossed in 7 and had 5 rebounds. Final score Louisiana Elite 36 – Armed Forces 34.

Their second game pitted the military squad against the 2008 Champion Memphis “Tigers”.  Although not the university squad, the team did feature formed Detroit Shock WNBA player Ashley Shields who was a mighty force for the team.  The Armed Forces team was plagued by 11 first-half turnovers and was down 25-17 at the half.  Navy guard HTFN Morgan Petite had 10 second-half points and Air Force’s 2d Lt Monica Mason tossed in 12 with 10 of those points being in the second half, but the Armed Forces went down to a 57-43 loss.

Coming up from the loser’s bracket, the team easily beat the Untouchables from Louisiana in their next game.  Leading 29-11 at the half-time break, the team never looked back and easily won with a 47-28 final.  Army ‘s CPT Caitlin Chiaramonte and Air Force’s Mason both were team leaders with 8 points in the first half.

Playing back-to-back without rest, the team faced their training camp adversary, the Houston Jaguars.  The team had been easily bested by the Jags in their training camp at Fort Hood, TX and was ripe for revenge; however, the Houston squad had other ideas.  The Jags jumped off to a 9-2 lead and were ahead 24-17 at the half.  The military squad got back to within 3 with less than two minutes remaining, but could get no closer.  As the final seconds ticked off the clock, their quest for making it to the semi-finals at the tournament was thwarted by the Houston Team with a final score of 48-43.  Navy’s Syreeta Drayton again led the squad with 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists.  Air Force’s Monica Mason also had 7 points

After carrying a double digit lead into half time, the USA managed only 10 third quarter points and fell to Germany as their last second shot fell short. 24 US turnovers were the story of the game, putting the Americans in a hole they could not climb out of, even shooting 50% and outrebounding the Germans 40 to 33. The loss clouded the Pool A picture and put German and American hopes in the hands of China and Korea, who played later in the day. With the Americans cheering on China and Germany squarely behind Korea, the Medal semi-finals were not finalized until the last thirty seconds of Pool A play, as former NBA star Wang Zhi Zhi led his team to victory, creating a three way tie between China, Germany, and the USA, all of which finished 2-2. A point differential tie-breaker put the US in a gold medal semi-final against Pool B winner Lithuania. Greece faces Kazakhstan in the other medal semi-final.

With pool play over, the CISM championships began two four team play-offs, with the top four pool play finishers battling for gold and the next four playing for fifth place. The US continued its heart stopping ways, taking their semi-final to the final minute before bowing to host Lithuania before a capacity crowd in Klaiepeda. Missed key free throws and poor shooting from the field (30%) plagued the Americans as their tournament record dropped to 2-3. They will play in the Bronze Medal game against Kazakhstan, which lost to Greece in the other semi-final.

MILLINGTON, Tenn. – The 2009 Armed Forces Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships wrapped up competition late Sunday night with the Navy women and the Air Force men taking gold medals in their respective divisions. The Navy women finished up strong with a record of 5-1, taking gold for the second consecutive year, while the Air Force men swept the competition away with a record of 6-0, clinching their fourth consecutive title.

The competition took place this year at the Naval Support Activity Mid-South in Millington, Tenn.

Navy guard (Yeoman Third Class) Syreeta Bromfield-Kemp, of the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center Cape May, N.J., led the Navy team to gold with 98 points, 73 rebounds, and 13 assists for the week. Bromfield-Kemp, the team captain, pushed her teammates hard to win their second gold medal in two years.

"We really did a gut check, and everybody brought something to the games; I'm so proud of the team," Bromfield-Kemp said. "It was awesome this week. It was kind of ruff when we started out, but I think we finally realized we could do it so we came together and we won. It feels so good to get my second gold. Woo!"

The All-Navy women's team dominated the championship series with a team total of 385 points, 231 rebounds, and 65 percent free-throw average. Head coach (Lt.) Samuel Caldwell attributed the win to the abilities of the guards.

"The women fought hard this week," Caldwell said. "We knew the Air Force was going to come out and try to be a spoiler by keeping us from making history with back to back gold medals. (Air Force head coach) Dale Carpenter is very capable head coach, I highly respect the guy. I knew he was going to have the Air Force ready to come out to play, but I think we have the best guards here collectively. I think they proved they were the best here with tonight's win and a second gold medal."

Air Force forward (Senior Airman) Jammar Major, from Hurlburt Field in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., led the men's team to a fourth consecutive gold medal with 61 points, 30 rebounds, and a free throw average of 75 percent. Major contributes the team's superior conditioning as the main factor for the Air Force's success.

"The last game was a heart filled game, because the Marines came to play," Major said. "They were all that stood between us and another gold medal, but we finished them off for the gold. I think we are the best conditioned team out here and that was a huge factor in our win."

The Air Force men's team racked up 377 points and grabbed 180 rebounds during the week-long championship series leading them to a historical fourth consecutive gold medal. Head coach John Bailey understands history; he has been part of the Air Force team for more than a decade and knew the games would be tough.

"I played on this team for 10 consecutive years, and now I'm coaching," Bailey said. "It's an incredible feat for me. The wins this week were hard fought. Every team came out here and challenged because we had a target on our backs with three in a row gold medals. My guys refused to lose. We stayed with our game plan and prevailed. It's so sweet to win the gold; we left no doubt with our fourth consecutive championship."

LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE — The International Military Sports Council Basketball Championships began at 9 a.m. at the Lackland Parade Grounds.

CISM President Italian Brig. Gen. (Dr.) Gianni Gola officially opened the games following a warm introduction by Brig. Gen. Len Patrick, 37th Training Wing commander.

“In the end, it won’t matter who wins,” General Patrick said. “The most important thing will be the new friends we make through this competition.”

Greece, Italy, Korea, Canada, Latvia, Lithuania and the United States are the countries with teams competing in the weeklong tournament.

Each team marched in with their country’s flag, and was greeted by an enthusiastic crowd.

“I think it’s an honor. I can’t really describe it at this point,” said Airman 1st Class Jammar Major, Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. Airman Major is a member of the United States Armed Forces basketball team.

After General Gola pronounced the beginning of the tournament, Mariachi Azul de San Antonio performed fiesta-themed music for cultural entertainment. The morning’s festivities also featured Capuraginga San Antonio, a capoeira dance troupe. Patrick Fitzgerald, a cowboy from Bandera, closed the ceremonies with roping tricks.

This is the second time Lackland AFB has hosted one of CISM’s sporting events. In 1998, the base held the council’s boxing tournament.

General Gola was very pleased that Lackland agreed to host the event, even though the United States is currently at war.

“10 years ago, while in Kosovo we faced a similar problem,” the Italian officer said. “It’s easy to say ‘friendship through sport’ when you don’t have problems, but it’s most important when you are having problems. We decided that we must continue to support friendship even in times of war.”

All of the games will take place at the Chaparral Fitness Center. Saturday and Sunday the games are scheduled for noon, 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The championship round will be held Monday. Games will be held at 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m.

“These countries are bringing their best military athletes. I am sure that all the spectators will enjoy the games,” said General Gola.

Following the final game, the bronze, silver and gold medals will be awarded to the winning teams. At that point, U.S. officials will pass the CISM Council flag to Lithuania, next year’s host country for the basketball tournament.

Currently, the council is the largest authority for military sports activity in the world. It comprises 130 countries.

The 60-year-old council was organized shortly after World War II ended as a means to get Soldiers off the battlefield and onto the sports field.

Basketball is one of 22 sports held in CISM supporting countries around the world.
On Jan. 22, 2007, the United Nations officially recognized CISM as a national governing organization.

“It wasn’t easy, because they were looking at us as a military organization,” said General Gola, but we proved that we were educating the younger generations to have mutual respect and that we can promote peace through sports.”

The United States won its first International Military Sports Council championship since 1998, defeating Lithuania, 84-74, on Tuesday at the Chaparral Fitness Center.

“It’s very gratifying, particularly because we beat a good team,” said Ted Albers, USA head coach. “They didn’t give it away; we had to take it from them.”

Lithuania played a tough game and held the lead going into the final period. In the fourth quarter, USA switched to a suffocating full-court man-to-man defense, tiring the Lithuanian team.

“We can go with all 12 of our players, so we started trying to tire them out,” said USA center Bernard James. “They were getting their rest by just bringing the ball up the court. Once we turned it from a half-court game into a full-court game, they got tired and it really broke their confidence.”

With 3:47 left in the fourth quarter, James stole the ball and went coast-to-coast for a breakaway dunk that broke the spirits of the Lithuanian team, which never recovered after that play. Lithuania scored only four points in the fourth quarter.

“They were killing us with the same play all night,” James said. “I was looking at the guard’s eyes so I knew he was going to pass it. I decided to gamble and thankfully, it paid off.”

James, who was also named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, finished the game with 12 points, 18 rebounds and six blocked shots.

USA started the game down 8-2 but had a 12-point lead after the first quarter. Point guard Ron Bartley hit back-to-back 3-pointers from 10 feet behind the arc with two minutes left in the first quarter. Bartley finished with 16 points.

USA took a 49-38 lead into intermission, but the second half proved to be a different story for the American military team.

Lithuania, led by small forward Vaidas Trepocka, surged back with a furious comeback to tie the game 53-53 with five minutes left in the third quarter. Trepocka scored a team-high 17 points in the game.

Lithuania then took a 62-61 lead with three minutes left in the third quarter on a 3-pointer by shooting guard Simonas Slivka. It was their first lead since early in the first quarter.

“Coach was always positive,” James said. “I can’t remember the last time he said something negative. He tells us exactly what we need to hear to keep us motivated. That’s what makes him a special coach.”

After being down by as many as six points, USA tied the game 70-70 with 5:42 left in the fourth quarter.

On the next play, power forward Jammar Major was fouled but still converted the layup for a three-point opportunity, giving USA a two-point lead.

The biggest difference though, was USA’s ability to continuously get points in the paint. They finished with 48 points in the paint compared to Lithuania’s 26.

Nwaelele, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, had a game-high 25 points.

The United States shot 44.2 percent from the field, while Lithuania shot 38.8 percent.

“It feels really good,” James said. “This is my third time coming out to this. For whatever reason, we didn’t win it all before. This has been amazing.”
