Armed Forces Taekwondo Athletes
Qualify For Nationals and CISM World Military Championship
Armed Forces Taekwondo athletes gathered at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania, Saturday, April 28, 2001 for a chance to qualify for the National Taekwondo Championship in Cleveland, OH, May 24-27, 2001 and the Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) World Military Championship to be held in the Netherlands, August 8-16, 2001.
"It was nice to see all the services once again represented at this Army Invitational", stated Mr. Phil Cota, Chief Army Sports. "We hope to once again bring Taekwondo to the Armed Forces Championship level."
In the Bantam weight class, Private First Class John Reyna (Camp Pendelton, CA) took home the gold. Renya defeated Private First Class Simon Behrndt (Fort Hood, TX) in the final round.
The featherweight class featured 2000 Olympic Trials fighter Specialist David Bartlett (Fort Carson, CO). Bartlett dominated Major Kenneth Hoag (Quantico, VA) in the gold medal match with the only technical knockout (TKO) of the day.
The heavy division featured Staff Sergeant Kevin Williams (Fort Carson, CO) defeated First Lieutenant Mark Tschample (Hurbert Field, FL) with a 3-2 score.The women's division showed some of the best competition of the day. Airmen First Class Larience Powell (Little Rock AFB, AR) won her finals match and Specialist Yelena Pisarenko (Ft Carson/Ft Huachuca, AZ) struck fast and furious to clinch the gold medal in the light division.
