11/01/04 - FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. - Team USA filled their coffers with precious metal of three different varieties - claiming gold, silver and bronze medals at the final day of competition of the 48th annual CISM world military boxing championships, Saturday, Oct. 30. It was the first time in recent memory that a U.S. boxer had earned a medal of any color in the CISM boxing championships.
Army 2nd Lt. Boyd Melson of Fort Carson, Colo., took the gold in the 69 kg weight class in front of a wildly cheering crowd that included his father at Barnes Field House here. He outpointed Uzbekistan's Elshod Rasulov 20-14 to win the championship.
Marine Corps Sgt. Eric Canales, of Camp LeJeune, N.C., took on Dilshod Mahnudov of Uzbekistan in the 64 kg weight class. Canales was outpointed 33-18, leaving him with the silver medal.
Army Sgt. Miguel Albares lost his bout in the semi-finals Thursday, but still brought home a bronze medal.
A thrilling afternoon of boxing, which included the second knockout of the championships from Robert Kramberger of Slovenia, came to a close when the CISM flag was lowered and handed to the South African delegation who will host the 49th annual CISM boxing championship in 2005. Petty Officer 2nd Class Isreal Spencer from Seal Beach, Calif., was stopped by Ovidiu Chereches of Romania one minute into the second round.

10/26/04 - FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. -- Enthusiastic shouts of support for military boxers in German, Italian, Arabic, Romanian, Russian and Dutch echoed through Barnes Field House here and created a thoroughly international atmosphere on the second night of preliminary bouts in the 48th CISM World Military Boxing Championships.
Four U.S. boxers took to the ring in their attempts to advance in the championship. Marine Corps Sgt. Robert Castillo was unsuccessful in his attempt to best South African Bonakele Madolo at 48 KG. Army Sgt. Miguel Albares bested Katiso Tsenoli of Lesotho at 54 KG. Army 2nd Lt. Boyd Melson continued the U.S. winning streak by outpointing Turkey's Atakan Ili at 69 KG. Italian Antonio Brillantino at 87 KG stopped Air Force Staff Sgt. Angel Landau.

Twenty countries including the United States are participating in the 48th annual CISM world military boxing championships. CISM is the world's second largest international sports organization after the International Olympic Committee. CISM's motto is "friendship through sports," and the organization hosts championships worldwide in more that 24 sports yearly.
Fort Huachuca has a long and rich boxing tradition and is the home of Army boxing. The installation will once again host the All Army Boxing Championships in January 2005 and the Armed Forces Boxing Championships in February 2005.
