Army Women and Air Force Men Captures Armed Forces Gold

By Bill Wesselhoff Florida Times-Union Military Publications

Air Force men’s and Army women’s bowling defended their respective all-events titles at the 2015 Armed Force Bowling Championships Friday through Sunday at Naval Air Station Jacksonville’s Freedom Lanes.

Army’s Sgt. Adam Ahmad and Sgt. Rose Brown led the way as all-events medalists. It was Ahmad’s first all-events title after a second in 2011.

“I put in a lot of hard work coming into this event,” the Seattle, Wash., native said. “I respected the field and didn’t get outside myself.”

For Brown, it was her third straight all-events title and her fourth in the past five years. She pulled a leg muscle during Saturday’s competition.

“I still performed well, but it was definitely painful. Mentally, I just had to stay focused,” said Brown, of Modesto, Calif.

In the king versus queen event that closed out the championships, Ahmad, with a 245 game, defeated Brown, with 212.

Navy men and women finished third all-events total pin competition. Four bowlers from Jacksonville’s tri-base area helped.

Navy first-time Armed Forces bowlers, Naval Station Mayport’s BM2 Roger Byrd, Naval Hospital Jacksonville’s Lt. Hillary Reeves and Kings Bay’s Lt. j.g. Lindsay Brock also contributed. Brock finished fifth in the All-Navy Trials, which preceded the Armed Forces meet. When a Marine Corps women’s bowler withdrew, she accepted an invitation to join their four-member team.

“I was a Marine for the weekend,” she said. “They made me feel welcome. I had fun. It was a learning experience.”

Lt. Leon Platt, of Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, was fourth in all-events, second in men’s doubles and third in men’s singles. A veteran of armed forces tournaments, he finished third in all-events in 2013.

Air Force men finished the 24-game series with 19,655 pins, followed by Army, 19,447, Navy, 19,166 and Marine Corps, 18,780.

Army women totaled 18,229 pins, Air Force, 17,685, Navy, 16,659 and Marines, 15,546.
