Air Force Men win 8th Straight; Army Women take Armed Forces Basketball Gold

By Steven Dinote Armed Forces Sports

The Air Force Men’s and Army Women’s basketball teams won gold to wrap up the 2014 Armed Forces Basketball Championship held at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., Nov 13.

The Air Force and Army faced each other in both the Men’s and Women’s Championship games.

During the Men’s finals, Air Force defeated Army 86-78 to capture their eight straight Armed Forces title.

Both teams played a physical game with over 58 total personal fouls.  Air Force 2nd Lieut. Todd Fletcher (Los Angeles AFB, Calif.) scored 16 points and 6’ 10” 1st Lieut. Taylor Broekius (Los Angeles AFB, Calif.) tallied 13 total rebounds as Air Force held the lead for the majority of the game.

“This is the eighth year in a row we are taking home the victory,” said Ricardo A. Bachelor, coach for the Air Force Men’s team. “I keep telling my team, ‘It’s in our pedigree, and the secret to our pedigree lies in hard work and attitude over talent.’”

Despite their loss, Army 1st Lieut. Jeremy Hence (Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.) and 2nd Lieut. Ella Ellis (Fort Sill, Okla.) both scored 19 points to keep Army in the game. Army finished second overall with the silver medal.

Navy defeated the Marine Corps in the consolation game to take third place.

In Women’s Championship action, Army dominated the competition going undefeated throughout pool play. Army faced Air Force in the championship game winning 71-55 to return to the top of the podium for the first time since 2010.

Army Sgt. Kimberly Smith (Fort Riley, Kan.) scored 19 points and Spec. Vanessa Lamison (Fort Bliss, Texas) scored 16 as Army Women lead the entire game to claim gold.

Lamison lead Army’s run with 100 points and Spec. Danielle Salley (Fort Bragg, N.C.) grabbed 65 rebounds.

Air Force and Navy both finished pool play with 3-3 records, but Air Force advanced to the championship game having outscored Navy in the point differential.

Navy Women defeated Marine Corps in the consolation game, placing third in the standings.

The 2014 Armed Forces Basketball Championship was held from 7-13 November 2014. Players from this year’s tournament were selected to represent the U.S. Armed Forces in international play.

The U.S. Men’s Armed Forces Basketball team will compete at the SHAPE International Basketball Tournament in Mons, Belgium from 1-6 December and then will reassemble to compete at the 2015 Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) World Military Games in South Korea 2-11 October.

“It was a long week and despite our struggles, we really came together as a team to pull off the victory,” said Todd Fletcher, who competed for the Air Force Men’s Team and who was selected to compete in Belgium. “I’m excited to go to Belgium. It’s going to be fun and hopefully we can represent by getting another gold medal.”

The U.S. Women’s Armed Forces Basketball team will compete at the CISM Women’s Basketball World Championship in Meyenheim, France in June 2015.
